Indiana Lt. Governor and Chief of Staff to Encourage Women to “LeadH...
The Saint Mary’s College Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative and the Career Crossings Collegiate Speaker Series are proud to welcome Indiana Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and her Chief of Staff Tonya Brothers-Bridge to campus for an interactive panel discussion titled “LeadHER.” The women will discuss topics like fearless leadership, transitions in life, and the power of women mentorship. The event will take place on Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m. in O’Laughlin Auditorium. The public is invited to this free but ticketed event. To reserve a ticket, go to www.saintmarys.edu/LeadHER.

Shiza Shahid, Malala Fund Co-Founder & Global Ambassador, to Speak at ...
The 10th Annual Diverse Students’ Leadership Conference (DSLC), hosted by the Saint Mary’s College Student Diversity Board (SDB), will be held on Monday, March 23 on campus. This year’s keynote speaker is Shiza Shahid, a social entrepreneur and co-founder and global ambassador of the Malala Fund. The organization represents young Nobel Peace Prize recipient Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban for her campaign for girls’ education. Shahid’s talk will take place at 7 p.m. in Carroll Auditorium Madeleva Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Saint Mary’s to Host “Get Inked” Teen Writing Conference
The Saint Mary’s College Department of Education and Michiana Writers’ Center is proud to sponsor “Get Inked,” a teen writing conference for students in grades 8-12 on Saturday, November 21. The event will last from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and activities will take place in Madeleva Hall, beginning in Carroll Auditorium. The daylong event costs $40 per student. Lunch and an autographed book by Jonathan Ryan or Laura Wolfe are included in the cost.

Math Professor Explains "Big Data" and New Graduate Program (WSBT-TV)
Mathematics professor Steven Broad is interviewed on WSBT-TV about the new Master of Science in Data Science program at Saint Mary's. This interdisciplinary program with a strong mathematical orientation prepares professionals to analyze existing data, i.e., "big data," and also lead significant changes in data analytics in the future. The professor explains what big data is and the demand for professionals who know how to use data analyses to make effective decisions.

The Saint Mary's College English Department is proud to welcome author Maggie Mitchell to campus on Thursday, September 17. Mitchell will read excerpts from her debut novel, Pretty Is, at 7:30 p.m. in Welsh Parlor on the second floor of Haggar College Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Belle Helps with Social Media for Pope's Visit to U.S.
Kelly Vaughan ’17 is doing her part to bring the excitement of Pope Francis’s first visit to America to social media, and she doesn’t even need to leave campus to do it. Vaughan was chosen among a pool of applicants from around the U.S. to be one of 30 people on the @PopeIsHope Digital Street Team. The team’s purpose is to capture images and stories surrounding the Pope’s visit showing that #GoodIsWinning in the world.

Belles Against Violence Office Hosts Stalking Awareness Talk (WNDU-TV)
Did you know that 75 percent of stalking victims are stalked by someone they know? Or that those between the age of 18 and 24 years old experience the highest rate of stalking? A talk held Tuesday, Jan. 27 helped the audience identify stalking behavior. WNDU interviewed Connie Adams, director of the Belles Against Violence Office (BAVO) at Saint Mary's, and Debbie Riddle, a national spokesperson against stalking whose sister was killed by an ex-boyfriend who stalked her.

Saint Mary's Students to Work at Four Houses for Rebuilding Together
On Saturday, April 11, Saint Mary's College students will participate in Rebuilding Together, a community-driven effort to rehabilitate homes in South Bend. This year is the 10th consecutive year the College has been involved in the program. More than 75 Saint Mary’s students will be stationed at four houses in the Olive Street/Lincoln Way West neighborhoods to complete tasks such as painting, cleaning, raking, and planting at a home sponsored by the College. The home receiving the most extensive work is 3018 Greene Street, where 25 students will be stationed.
