Alumna Advocates on Behalf of Military Spouses Rachel Torres Bell ’98 crafts communication strategy for a living. Typically, that work has been on behalf of corporate concerns. In recent years, however, Bell has given her time and talents to expanding legislation that would send a powerful and positive message about the value of hiring military spouses in the workforce. College Hosts International Thomas Merton Society Conference Saint Mary’s is welcoming over 200 people from around the world for the 18th International Thomas Merton Society (ITMS) biennial conference. Over the weekend of June 22-25, attendees will have the opportunity to dive deeply into the life and work of Thomas Merton through research and reflection. The Habit of Poetry How did a full-time high school teacher and part-time author and editor from New Jersey, a person with no link to Saint Mary’s College, find himself charmed by the works of Madeleva Wolff? Nick Ripatrazone is the first to ask these questions, and though he knows their answer, he still marvels at the circumstances that brought him to writing The Habit of Poetry: The Literary Lives of Nuns in Mid-century America. "A Good Life Means Making Choices" This year, seven faculty members are retiring from Saint Mary’s College, logging a collective 193 years guiding students across disciplines. Research Symposium Back at Saint Mary’s On Thursday, May 4, the campus-wide Saint Mary’s Symposium reignited. Dormant since 2019, the creative and academic works from students and faculty were once again on full display at locations across the campus. 2023 Mission Awards The Division for Mission hosted the annual Sister Rose Anne Schulz Mission Awards and Senior Recognition on May 2, 2023, to celebrate the practices of faith and justice among students this year. New Summer Programs Foster Innovation Six new programs have been added to the Saint Mary’s summer camp roster this year, including explorations in healthcare, music, fitness, and innovation. Two of the six focus on entrepreneurship for aspiring businesswomen of all ages and will utilize Saint Mary’s new Spark Lab, a 5,000-square-foot, fully equipped makerspace located on campus in the Haggar College Center. Advancement Update ​Since joining Saint Mary’s 18 months ago, I have been motivated and inspired by this close community of students, parents, alumnae, faculty, and staff. Leading the Advancement Division fills me not only with gratitude for the high-caliber work of this team but with excitement as we wrap up several months of hosting alumnae on campus and traveling on behalf of the College!
