OLIVET, Mich. - The Saint Mary's soccer team fell in a 1-0 final at Olivet on Tuesday afternoon.
The host Comets registered the lone goal of the game in the fifth minute of play. An initial shot by Olivet ricocheted off of the post before the Comets' Abby Radcliffe pounced on the rebound and found the back of the net to make it a 1-0 game.
A collective defensive effort by Saint Mary's both kept the Comets in the game and held the Belles within striking distance of Olivet. Elizabeth Schulte was credited with a goal-saving defensive play in the 18th minute while Madison Jurgovan was similarly credited with a defensive save in the 32nd minute of play. Thallia Robles made three saves in quick succession in the later portion of the first half of action.
Offensively, Rose Stackhouse had a shot on goal saved in the 21st minute. Stackhouse later had a shot go wide left in the final six minutes of the opening period of action.
The defense continued to limit the chances for the Comets over the final 45 minutes of play. Olivet registered just four shots on goal during the second half - all of which were saved by Robles. Lindsey Herdsman and Sophie Bubnar, meanwhile, gave the Belles a pair of scoring chances in the half. Herdsman had a shot on goal saved in the 69th minute, and Bubnar saw her strike in the 82nd minute carry over the crossbar for the goal kick.
