CHICAGO, Ill. - The Saint Mary's soccer team fell in a 5-2 final at North Park on Tuesday evening.
The Belles and the Vikings played a tightly-contested opening half. North Park was able to break through with a goal in the 13th minute, but Saint Mary's quickly responded. Kellen Hinchey cut off a deflected pass by the North Park defense in the middle of the offensive end. The junior played a ball quickly to the left for Sophie Bubnar. Bubnar shielded her defender and found herself with some open space along the left side of the 18-yard box. The freshman then fired a shot from 15 yards out and buried the attempt to level the game at 1-1.
North Park took their second lead of the game in the 24th minute, but the Belles again proved to have the answer. The Vikings took a goal kick from the right side of the six-yard box only to see Sophie Bubnar intercept the pass 35 yards upfield. Bubnar took a touch before playing the ball ahead for Rose Stackhouse. Stackhouse then flicked a pass over a defender for Bubnar to run onto in the middle of the field, and the forward again shielded a defender before firing a shot between the goalkeeper and the post from 15 yards out to make it a 2-2 score in the 31st minute. Delaney Rohlman came up with four saves over the final 11 minutes of the period as the game stood at 2-2 at the halftime break.
Saint Mary's had some chances early in the second half to try to take the lead. Stackhouse and Bubnar each had a shot blocked in the opening three minutes of play. A short while later, Stackhouse sent a shot just wide. The pressure continued in the 56th minut with Lexi Trombly having an effort blocked by a defender. Stackhouse then had a shot saved just a few seconds later.
The Vikings broke through with a goal in the 61st minute and added another goal in the 68th minute to gain momentum on their home pitch. North Park then added a third goal in the half in the 82nd minute for the 5-2 final margin as the Belles were unable to put another shot on goal.
