NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's soccer team suffered a 5-0 setback against Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon.
Kalamazoo struck quickly with a pair of goals in the opening ten minutes of action. Midway through the period, the Belles had one of their best offensive threats of the first half. With under 21 minutes remaining before the break, Rose Stackhouse played a perfectly-weighted pass ahead for Sophie Bubnar. Bubnar had some space to play ahead with only a defender on her inside shoulder to beat, but that defender came up with a slide tackle to clear the ball out of play to stop the threat. Six minutes later, Delaney Rohlman made a big save on a dangerous free kick by the Hornets to keep the Belles in the thick of things. With under 14 minutes left on the clock, Lindsey Herdsman played a long ball along the left side of the field for Stackhouse. Stackhouse then had a centering pass for Bubnar, and Bubnar played a pass to the right to Elizabeth Schulte. Schulte looked to return a quick pass to Bubnar on the run up the middle of the box, but the ball was played away as the score stood at 2-0 at the half.
The Hornets extended their lead in the 49th minute, but the Belles continued to battle. Rose Stackhouse sent a shot on goal from the top of the box only to have the effort saved in the 61st minute. Kalamazoo made it a 4-0 game in the 77th minute before Saint Mary's put together a stretch of solid possession. The Belles earned a corner kick, and Ashley Hernandez found the loose ball inside the box but saw her strike go just left of the post. Maya Cole added a bending shot from the top-left corner of 18-yard box less than a minute later only to have the effort caught just inside the post. In the 83rd minute, Stackhouse played the ball to Hinchey as Saint Mary's tried to catch the Hornets off guard in a transition opportunity. Hinchey played a pass over the final Kalamazoo defender who was standing just inside the Belles' offensive end as Sophie Bubnar looked to time her run for the breakaway. Bubnar, however, was whistled offside to stop the play. The Hornets tallied a final goal in the 88th minute for the 5-0 decision.
Rose Stackhouse and Sophie Bubnar each had two shots on goal, and Maya Cole added a shot on goal. Delaney Rohlman made six saves, and Thallia Robles registered two saves.
The Belles (6-9, 1-4 MIAA) travel to Adrian for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
