At Saint Mary’s, you have the unique opportunity to build relationships and conduct research with your professors. Students can work side-by-side with professors across all academic disciplines and professional programs on research projects that fuel their passions.
As a liberal arts college in the Holy Cross tradition, Saint Mary’s teaches and empowers women to become leaders, citizens of the world, and critical thinkers. Opportunities like the Student Independent Study and Research (SISTAR) program funds research for three student-faculty pairs each year for eight weeks during the summer. The student and faculty member may share the same project, or they may do separate projects that complement or support each others’ work. Grants, Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) and other funding like the Marjorie A. Neuhoff science research communities are also available for students.
Cassie Libbing ’17 earned a SISTAR grant to research ovarian cancer with associate professor of biology Calli Versagli ’09.

This year, the College held the first annual Saint Mary’s Symposium: Research and Creative Scholarship to showcase recent student and faculty research projects. Panel discussions and poster presentations allowed students and faculty to share their projects with the community.
