Public Speaker Policy

Saint Mary’s College is a place where Sister Madeleva said: “We promise you discovery, the discovery of yourselves, the discovery of the universe, and your place in it.” As part of that “discovery,” the College supports the invitation of speakers to come to campus to discuss topics of interest to the College community.

Speakers may be invited to campus and sponsored by a recognized College entity (e.g. student organization, College department, College center, etc.). The sponsor must follow established procedures for scheduling and publicizing of the event. The intent of the College is to provide an atmosphere of open exchange of ideas that enhances the educational environment for the College community. As part of such an open exchange, the fact that a speaker makes a presentation at the College does not constitute an endorsement of the speaker’s ideas by Saint Mary’s College. No such endorsement should be implied by any member of the College community or by the general public.

The College retains the right to reschedule or relocate the event or, in extraordinary instances, to cancel the event if the College determines the content or controversial nature of the speaker may pose safety concerns or be disruptive to the normal operations of the College.
