A Conversation on Current Labor Issues and Politics

Description: The Saint Mary's College Justice Education Program will host a panel discussion and conversation titled “Wisconsin from the Inside-Out: A Conversation on Current Labor Issues and Politics” on Monday, February 28 at 4 p.m. in the Cushwa-Leighton Library. The panel will include:

o   Barbara Fick, labor law expert from the University of Notre Dame Law School

o   Tony Flora, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers Union in South Bend

o   Jan Pilarski, director of the Saint Mary’s College Justice Education Program, who will speak on the Catholic tradition on work and labor

The panelists will talk about the history of and the purpose for labor unions and discuss labor issues that have been in the news lately, including the protests in Wisconsin over legislation to reduce public employee union bargaining power and benefits. Democratic state senators in Wisconsin left the state in an effort to stymie a bill. In a similar move, Indiana Democratic lawmakers left the state in protest of about a dozen education and labor bills that majority Republicans are pushing in the General Assembly.
