February 18, 2011 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—As part of the celebration of 100 years of International Women’s Day, Saint Mary's College, a women’s college, will host to Dr. Pam Rajput, an Indian women’s rights activist and scholar. Dr. Rajput is professor emeritus of political science at Punjab University in India and has published a wide variety of materials in the fields of gender, development, and politics. The lecture will be held on Wednesday, March 2, at 4 p.m. in Vander Vennet Theatre in Student Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Rajput has worked for more than 30 years in India in a range of social change and gender justice causes. She has previously been involved in activities such as advocacy and research for gender equality and women’s rights. She is deeply committed to gender equality and the women’s movement specifically in India. Rajput was responsible for founding one of the first centers for Women’s Studies and Development in India and has also served as the vice president of the National Alliance of Women Organizations (NAWO).

Dr. Rajput is coming to the United States to attend the "Commission on the Status of Women" (CSW) meetings in New York. The CSW is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women worldwide. Dr. Rajput’s lecture will focus on her work and her reflections on the impact that economic globalization is having on women in the world.

"We are honored to be hosting such a distinguished scholar and women's rights advocate,” said Jennifer Zachman, director of the Women’s Studies Program. “The Program in Women's Studies at Saint Mary's College is committed to educating students about women's lives and experiences both locally and globally. Dr. Rajput's visit will provide a wonderful opportunity to examine how economic globalization interacts with gender, particularly as we near the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day"

Dr. Rajput’s lecture is part of the event, “Women and Development: Critical Issues in the 21st Century.” The Women’s Studies Program, Center For Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL), Justice Education Program, Intercultural Studies Program, and Department of Sociology, all of Saint Mary's College, will host the event.
