Week 1: Get a SMART START to the semester!
Things to do the first week:
- Read the syllabus for each of your courses.
Understand how many exams and homework assignments there will be, know how much each assignment is worth, and know what the professor expects of you. You’ll be prepared to make a decision about remaining in / dropping the class. And, always, talk to the professor before making your decision!
(Last day to add a class is Sunday, August 30. Be sure to talk with your advisor about this before doing anything.)
- Use separate 3-ring binders for each class.
Avoid taking notes for your psychology class in your math notebook. Moreover, a 3 – ring binder allows you to out handouts, quizzes and exams, and whatever in chronological order. This helps you process info easier.
- Make a friend in each class.
You can compare your notes – and your understanding - of what occurs in class. And, often times, a study partner is exactly the best study strategy.
- Take responsibility for your own learning.
It is YOUR job to attend class. Additionally, YOU must memorize, understand, and, ultimately, learn how and when to use the information. If YOU cannot do so, YOU must get the help you need.
- Put the dates on your calendar and then attend the Academic Skills & Strategies Workshops whenever they are offered.
