Summer Research at Saint Mary's

The Belle Bats are it again!

Morgan Kinniry '18 reaches her gloved hand out to a landing hawkBiology Professor Laura Kloepper took Morgan Kinniry ’18 to Amarillo, TX to study antipredator vocal and flight adaptations in Brazilian free-tailed bats. The duo also worked with a trained hawk to help capture data by flying through packs of bats while they emerge from caves. Strapped with imaging equipment could capture a unique angle that benefited their research.

Later in the summer Professor Kloepper took Makenzie Duncan ’18 to Auburn University to begin a project that investigates the bacterial species and abundance in bat guano.

Read more about the student’s adventures into bat research on their blog.
