Saint Mary's College Announces New Trustees

June 14, 2016 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — The Saint Mary’s College Board of Trustees will welcome six new trustees to the ranks this week at the board’s summer retreat. The new members include Sean Klimczak, Reverend Paul Kollman, CSC, Maureen Karnatz Smith ’85, Sister Marilyn Zugish ’70, CSC, Alumnae Association Board President Kelly O’Shea Carney ’84 and student trustee, Margaret Carswell ’17.
Sean Klimczak of New York City is senior managing director/partner at The Blackstone Group. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1998 with a degree in finance and business economics. He went on to earn a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University in 2005. He serves as President of The Blackstone Charitable Foundation and is a member University of Notre Dame Wall Street Committee. Saint Mary’s alumna Kimberly Nemeth Klimczak ’99, is his wife.
Father Paul Kollman, CSC, is the executive director of the Center for Social Concerns at the University of Notre Dame and an associate professor of theology. Father Kollman graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1984 with a degree in history and theology. He earned a master of divinity degree, MDiv, from Notre Dame in 1990 and a PhD from The Divinity School at University of Chicago in 2001. Father Kollman serves another Holy Cross institution, Stonehill College, as a member of its Board of Trustees. He is also president of the International Association of Mission Studies and president of the American Society of Missiology.
Maureen Karnatz Smith ’85 of Avon Lake, Ohio earned a degree in finance and accounting at Saint Mary’s before receiving her master’s in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987. Her professional work includes serving as second vice president of The Northern Trust Company in Chicago until 1994. Her service work includes several years, 1994-2000, as a member of the Alumnae Association Board of Directors. Smith currently sits on Saint Mary’s Madeleva Society Steering Committee. She is also chair of the Board of Directors at Magnificat High School, a member of the Advancement Committee at Saint Martin de Porres High School, and chair of the Saint Raphael Parish Capital Campaign.
Sister Marilyn Zugish ’70, CSC, is director of mission integration and spiritual care at Holy Cross Village in Notre Dame, Indiana. Sister Marilyn graduated from Saint Mary’s in 1970 with a degree in history. She earned master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of San Francisco and her PhD in education policy, planning and administration from the University of Maryland. She sits on several committees for the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, is the co-director of the Unity Garden at Holy Cross Village and a volunteer facilitator at Near Northwest Neighborhood.
Kelly O’Shea Carney '84 of Coopersburg, Pa. is executive director of the Center for Excellence in Dementia Care at Phoebe Ministries. She graduated from Saint Mary’s with a degree in psychology. She earned both a master’s degree and PhD in counseling psychology from Southern Illinois University. As president of the Saint Mary’s Alumnae Association Board of Directors, she sits on the College’s Board of Trustees as a voice for the alumnae. Her other service work includes serving as co-chair of the American Psychological Association and Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services Task Force.
Margaret Carswell ’17 of Delmar, New York is a nursing major and an active member of the Student Nurse’s Association (SNA) on campus. She is also a student director in the Office of Civic and Social Engagement (OCSE). Her service on campus includes serving as both junior and senior class president. Carswell sat on the Presidential Search Committee that chose Jan Cervelli as the College’s 12th president.
Meanwhile, Susan Latham ’91 joined the Board in January as the faculty representative.
Susan Latham ‘91 is chair of the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders and Director of the Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology program. Latham graduated from the College with a degree in Communication before going onto to earn her master’s and PhD in Speech Language Pathology from Michigan State University. She returned to the College in 2003 to teach and in 2015, she received the Donald R. and Nora Berry Fischer ’73 Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. Latham has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career for her dedication to her students and contributions to the field of Speech Language Pathology. She was instrumental in creating the new graduate program, which launched in August 2015 and assumed her role on the Board of Trustees in January.
