September 30, 2014 (Notre Dame, Ind.)— The Tami Tango Trio, an internationally acclaimed Argentine music and dance ensemble, will be at Saint Mary’s College for a two-day residency Monday-Tuesday, October 13-14. The trio, which features traditional Argentine tango and folk music, will offer three events open to students and the public. Click for a campus map.
On Monday at noon in the Regina Hall’s North Lounge, there will be an introductory lesson on how to dance the tango. No prior dancing experience is necessary. At 7 p.m., the Tami Tango Trio will hold a formal concert, also in the Regina North Lounge. The event will be divided into two parts. The first part will be a traditional concert performed by the trio and the dancers they bring. The event will conclude with a “milonga,” a traditional Argentine social dance. Attendees will then have the opportunity to dance while the Trio plays. Admission is free for Saint Mary’s, Holy Cross College, and University of Notre Dame students and $5 for the public. No partner or experience is necessary.
Emily Rose McManus, assistant professor of musicology and ethnomusicology at Saint Mary’s, encourages students to attend both events. “The dance class on Monday at noon is a great opportunity to come and learn the tango. The students and others who may attend can then take what they learn and apply it to formal dance that evening.”
On Tuesday, from 9:30-10:45 a.m. in Moreau Center for the Arts, room 114, the Tami Tango Trio will conclude their visit with a lecture on Argentine folk music and a question and answer session. This lecture is free of charge and open to Saint Mary’s, Holy Cross, and Notre Dame students as well as the public.
