Sister Marian Therese Slattery, CSC
(- September 24, 2008)
Please, join in prayer of thanksgiving for this Sister of the Holy Cross who died on September 24, 2008.
Sister Marian Therese had many interesting and challenging assignments during her years in Holy Cross. Her wonderful organizational skills and "no nonsense" approach enabled her to accomplish an amazingly diverse number of ministries -- from being a school administrator in Brazil to her pastoral and community services in Israel and Ghana. Perhaps the special assignment in 1983 was the most difficult and the most satisfying of her varied ministries. As co-director of relief operations with Catholic Relief Services in Beirut, Lebanon , s he used her excellent skills to assist hundreds of thousands of refuges in dire need of help as a result of the Lebanon war .
Sister had many gifts which she shared generously; o ne of these was her outstanding ability to effectively relate to children no matter their age. Whether in conversation or in play she was a master at connecting with the young. It was her special gift.
After leaving the field of formal education, Sister devoted her time and effort to serving in various areas of social service , where her talents were put to good use. Her pastoral care ministry reached such diverse groups as the Spanish population of Texas, the retired sisters at Saint Mary's , and hospital patients in Mission Hills, California.
During her final battle with an aggressive brain tumor , she was accompanied with love by her blood sister, Sister Rita, whose devotion and attentiveness have been a model for all caregivers.
Funeral arrangements for Sister Marian Therese are pending. May she rest in peace.
