Sister Margery Mitternight, CSC
( - September 16, 2008)
Word has been received of the death of Sister Margery (Mitternight), who died at 11:35 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, in Saint Mary’s Convent.
Sister Margery was a very outgoing person and loved to have company. Before she became too ill, she took her wheelchair tours through the halls and byways of Saint Mary’s almost every afternoon. She enjoyed the interaction with any passersby who willingly stopped to exchange bits of news with her and with any companion she could talk into accompanying her.
Sister’s ministry life became very checkered after she ended her 27 years teaching experience in 11 elementary schools in the East. She worked for a few years in the Cardinal Nursing Home but to quote her, “That did not work out,” so she entered various other ministries here at Saint Mary’s. She microfilmed medical records for Holy Cross Shared Services and worked in the Purchasing Office, Residence Life Department at the college and the “big” kitchen with Sister Justine Marie before she came full-circle and went back to teaching and tutoring for the remainder of her active life.
When Sister Margery retired to Saint Mary’s she continued doing her crafts as best she could. Sending thank you notes and fancy beaded bracelets for small favors done for her became a mark of her gratitude. Peter in the Copy and Mail Center has been a recipient of her gifts and has six of these lovely bracelets hanging above the counter only because he saved her catalogues in a special way.
Each morning sister eagerly greeted her Lord as the Eucharistic minister gave her Communion. She loved this time and always had a beautiful smile and thank you for the minister. She now greets her Lord in person. May she rest in peace.
Funeral arrangements for Sister Margery are as follows: Reception of the body on Friday, September 19, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. with the Mass of the Resurrection and the eulogy at 10:30 a.m. the same day. All of these ceremonies will take place in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto.
