( - December 8, 2008)

Please, join in prayer of thanksgiving for this Sister of the Holy Cross who died on December 8, 2008.

Our little “Town Crier,” as she was affectionately called, surprised all of us and has gone home to God. She is now celebrating her feast day with him and all her friends in heaven, so it is hard for us to grieve because we know of her joy.

Sister Mary was always interested in people and was as gregarious as anyone you might know. She was willing and eager to share good news and bad so that others could rejoice or pray, whichever was appropriate for the issue.

She religiously visited the sister-patients in the convent and listened sympathetically as she became aware of their needs. She was often the ambassador of these sisters and alerted the staff to specific needs or any concerns she had regarding the sick. Many called her an angel because she was such a good advocate.

The convent library was one of her favorite places because she loved to read. She had a wide range of interest so she was a great conversationalist and brought much to every meeting -- whether at the dinner table, in the hallways or in a sister’s room. She was a delight.

Sister Mary’s formal ministry was teaching or tutoring in the elementary schools of the West, which she did for over 50 years. Many of her students and even her college classmates kept in touch with her because she was such a special person and they valued her friendship.

Last evening Sister Dorothy Kebba, Sister Mary’s next door neighbor in Rosary Hall, put a feast day card in Mary’s basket. Her message read, “Happy feast day, may you be in the Lord’s embrace.” This card was open on Sister’s desk this morning, so she took the message to heart and now enjoys the Lord’s embrace for all eternity.

Funeral arrangements for Sister Mary are as follows: Reception of the body with eulogy on Thursday, December 11, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. with the Mass of Resurrection at 1:30 p.m. the same day. May Sister Mary rest in peace.
