Sister Bettina was born in Washington, DC, to the late Edward Davis Batchelder and Gertrude Barron Batchelder. She was the third child of four. She is survived by her brother, Charles Batchelder, of MD. Her sister, Margaret, and brother, Barron, predeceased her. Sister is also survived by her nieces, Claire Durkin, IL, and Catherine Dunn, CA, and nephew, James Batchelder of MD.

Before entering the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Sister Bettina gained her education at St. Gabriel’s School and the Academy of Holy Cross, both in Washington, DC. She attended Dunbarton College, Washington, DC, receiving a BA degree in English. Sister entered the Congregation in 1941 and began teaching in senior high schools in 1944. She taught in Washington, DC, VA, and NC. Sister attended Catholic University and earned her MA degree in English in 1950. In 1957 she was named to the Formation House, Saint Mary’s, Notre Dame, IN, and in 1958, she moved to and taught English at Dunbarton College. In 1960, Sister earned her MA in Guidance and Counseling and was Dean of Students, Dunbarton College until 1970. Sister Bettina taught English at Cardinal Cushing College, MA, 1970 and in 1972, English at Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN. She taught at the Academy of the Holy Cross, Kensington, MD, for 8 years, then was named to the Regional House as Assistant to the Regional Superior. In 1982 - 1987, she was Regional Administrator for the Eastern Regional Council, Mount Rainier MD. Sister returned to teaching in MD, VA and in 1990, was Adult Education Resource Person in Nora, VA. Sister taught and was involved in parish ministry as a visitor for St. Raphael Parish in Raleigh, NC. In 2000, Sister retired to Silver Spring, MD until 2003 when she elected to return to Saint Mary’s Convent, Notre Dame, IN. Sister was active in the ministry of prayer until her death.
