NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team won all 25 draw controls of the contest on their way to a 18-5 victory over Trine on Saturday afternoon.
Kate Kelly started the day off by winning the opening draw. A three-second violation gave Clare Theisen a free position opportunity less than a minute later, and Theisen buried the chance to put the Belles up 1-0 just 48 seconds into play. Kendra Osinski came up with three saves over the next five minutes of play to keep the Thunder off the scoreboard. After the third save of that series, Rachael Leonard picked up the ground ball off the save and started the clear attempt. Clare Theisen then drew another free position attempt, and the senior converted her second chance to make it a 2-0 game. Seconds later, Kate Kelly won her third draw and immediately fed a pass to Erin Doyle. Doyle sliced through the defense and deposited her first goal of the contest for a 3-0 Saint Mary's lead. The Belles converted a Trine turnover into a goal a minute and a half later with Molly Stout assisting Doyle's second strike of the day as the Thunder called a timeout at the 4-0 score.
Hanna Makowski then picked up an assist on a Molly Stout goal at the 20:50 mark as the Belles edged ahead 5-0. Trine responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 5-2. Kate Kelly then tallied a free position goal, and Molly Stout chipped in her second goal of the game to give Saint Mary's a five-goal lead at 7-2 with 16:53 on the clock. The Trine goalie came up with a pair of saves over the next minute-plus, and Thunder connected on a series of solid passes and converted a close-range shot for a goal with 14:46 to make it a 7-3 game. Hanna Makowski shifted the momentum back to the Belles with a goal just over a minute later. Erin Doyle netted two goals, and Kate Kelly and Raigan Althouse each recorded a goal over the final 12 minutes of the half to give the Belles a 12-3 lead.
Kate Kelly quickly implemented the running clock with her third goal of the game, and Zoe Gatzimos sneaked a shot in six minutes later to give the Belles a 14-3 lead. Erin Doyle added three goals down the stretch, and Molly Stout capped off a hat trick with a second-half goal as the Belles claimed the win by a final score of 18-5.
