Allergy Injections

Saint Mary’s College Health Center will administer allergy injections, free of charge, to students under the care of an allergist. A student who wishes to use this service should bring her serum and the orders from her allergist to the Health Center. It is advised that a student do this at least one day prior to when she expects to receive her first injection. This allows the staff adequate time to transcribe her orders and phone the allergist if needed. We require that allergy serum be stored in the Health Center between injections.

Due to the potential for serious allergic reaction, injections must be given when a physician or nurse practitioner is present in the Health Center. Physician/nurse practitioner clinics run in the afternoons three days a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Students are required to schedule an appointment for their allergy shots. This can be done in person or by calling the Health Center at (574) 284-4805. The physician/nurse practitioner clinic schedule is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. The Health Center staff will make every effort to notify students of these changes either by phone or e-mail. A student is held responsible for calling ahead to cancel any appointment she is unable to keep. Failure to do so will result in a $10 fee being assessed to her student account.

After receiving an allergy injection, students are required to remain in the Health Center for a period of observation. The length of observation will not be less than 20 minutes but may be longer if so ordered by her allergist. To allow for this, a student will not be allowed to schedule an appointment for an injection during the last 30 minutes of any clinic.

At the end of each academic year, a student is responsible for picking up her serum from the Health Center. If no arrangements have been made, the serum will be discarded and the injection record will be mailed to her allergist.
