Two Choral Events Planned for November January 1, 2011 Saint Mary’s College will host two special women’s choral events in November. On Wednesday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m., the Fall Choral Concert will be held in O’Laughlin Auditorium (ticket information below). The College will host the High School Women’s Choir Festival Thursday-Friday, November 17-18, also in O’Laughlin Auditorium. It is the 27th year that the women’s college has hosted the high school event.

Winter Wonderland Offers Christmas Cheer to Area Children January 1, 2011 The Saint Mary’s College’s Student Activities Board (SAB) will host its second annual Winter Wonderland party for area children on Saturday, December 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. SAB invited children ages 5-12 from South Bend’s Center for the Homeless, Hope Ministries, and Coquillard Primary Center, a Title 1 school with which the College partners. Children of Saint Mary’s College faculty and staff are also invited.

Gerontology Program Co-hosts Forum on Senior Independent Living January 1, 2011 The Saint Mary’s College Gerontology Program is proud to partner with the Advocacy Committee of REAL Services, Inc. for a forum titled “Staying at Home: What are Your Real Choices?” on Tuesday, October 13 at 2 p.m. in the Vander Vennet Theater in the Student Center. Artist to Talk about Icon Exhibit January 1, 2011 In recognition of November as All Saints Month and the beginning of the season of Advent, which begins November 27, the Cushwa-Leighton Library at Saint Mary’s College will exhibit icons by artist Janet L. Johnson of Mishawaka. The exhibit features portraits of Christ and the saints painted in traditional icon style, along with drawings of the Madonna and Jesus. Johnson’s work will be on exhibit from October 31 through December 22.

History professor talks about his passion for acting (The Observer) January 1, 2011 It’s not unusual for students to say they discovered things they didn’t know about themselves while at Saint Mary’s, but how about a professor? Bill Svelmoe, associate professor of history, discovered a love of acting while at the College. Ten years ago, after continually turning down one of his students' requests that he take the male lead in an upcoming play, he said he decided to give it a shot. He’ll perform in the Theatre Program’s production of the tragicomedy “Eurydice” next week.

Second Student Appointed to National Advisory Council January 1, 2011 Saint Mary’s College is pleased to announce that the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has selected Laura Corrigan ’13 of New York City to sit on its national Student Advisory Council (SAC). She is one of ten women appointed to the council from colleges and universities across the country and the second Saint Mary's College student in as many years to be selected.

Economics professor: Low gas prices=poor economy (WSBT-TV) January 1, 2011 Professor of economics Jerry McElroy was interviewed for a story about the cause of current low gas prices. "So goes the economy so goes the price of oil,” McElroy said. “When the economy is booming, then the price of oil is rising – and vice versa, as we see today."
