Post-Election Events

The election brought out different emotions. For some, it was excitement about the future. And for others, the results have caused feelings of dismay. Saint Mary’s is hosting events and offering opportunities for members of the College community who want to reflect on what's happened and share thoughts.

Wednesday, December 7:

  • Former U.S. treasurer and conservative pundit Bay Buchanan will speak at 7 pm in the Little Theatre, Moreau Center for the Arts. The lecture is free and open to the public. With her lecture, “Female Empowerment Isn’t Just for Liberals,” Buchanan will discuss how women’s equality should not be a partisan issue — it should be seen as a human rights issue that transcends party politics. When women hold positions of leadership in politics, more bills are passed and more collaboration occurs. Buchanan served as U.S. treasurer under President Ronald Reagan, and was campaign chairman for her brother, Pat Buchanan, during all three of his presidential campaigns. She also is a former commentator on CNN. Buchanan’s talk is sponsored by the Saint Mary’s College Republicans and the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute.

Friday, November 18:

  • A workshop titled, "Compassionate Learning: Transforming Our Culture Through Self-Transformation," will be offered by Prof. Marne Austin and Prof. Laura Haigwood from 12-1 pm in Room 145, Spes Unica Hall. Compassionate learning is informed by and infused with the wisdom of compassionate listening, nonviolent communication, invitational rhetoric, and radical compassion. The goal is to help strengthen and transform our commitments to learn compassionately, embrace our wholeness, and learn and live with love and courage.
