Sister M. Rita Dolores (Carr), CSC

 (May 27, 1920- July 9, 2010)

Please, join in prayer of thanksgiving for this Sister of the Holy Cross who died on July 9, 2010 in Saint Mary's Convent.

Sister Rita Dolores had a special skill in relationships.  In fact, her whole ministry life was spent successfully teaching and interacting with that uniquely challenging age group, junior high school students.  This skill extended to all levels of interpersonal relationships as she was often asked to fill the roles of teacher, principal and religious superior simultaneously, a daunting task not for the faint-of-heart.  Many of the sisters who lived with her during these years praise her for her support and kindness.

As a true daughter of Irish heritage, she wrote in her short biography of the memories of cherished family times together:  “The Carr family thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings and spent every Sunday at grandma’s house, where everyone’s favorite foods were prepared and where they always had Irish soda bread.  All sang Irish songs and danced the Irish jig and Irish reel while grandfather played Irish music.”  Her joy in dancing continued throughout her life, as did her Irish sense of humor.

This love of all things Irish was a part of who she was, so it is not surprising that her trip to Ireland with her dear friend Sister Joseph (Sullivan) was a highlight of her life.  These two friends spent weeks driving across the country visiting all of their relatives, relishing being the guests of honor over and over while partying in true Irish fashion.

Sister Rita Dolores was a woman of many talents and she generously shared these with everyone.  Her famous fudge, made from her “secret” recipe, was a gift appreciated by all.  Her special artistic touch was evident in every feast day celebration.

Having Dolores as part of her religious name was important to her because her uncle, a Latin student, was given the privilege of naming her, Dolores Virginia, at birth. She had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother under her title, “Mother of Sorrows.”  It was key to her spirituality.  The Seven Dolor beads were a vital part of her prayer life and provided her with the spiritual strength that she embraced in her daily life.  This “Mother of Sorrows” so close to her in life now welcomes her in eternity where she rests in peace.

Funeral arrangements for Sister Rita Dolores are pending.

May she rest in peace.
