Saint Mary's celebrates Chinese Culture at 10th annual China Night

February 12, 2018 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — The Saint Mary’s College Chinese Culture Club (CCC) will host its 10th annual China Night on Saturday, February 17 from 3 – 5 p.m. in O’Laughlin Auditorium. The event will celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Dog. The program includes singing, dancing, traditional instruments, a Tai Chi performance, and more. The club will provide snacks, raffle tickets for Chinese gifts, and red money pockets for students and children. The event is free and open to the public.

Children dance at China Night 2016“China Night is organized to commemorate the Chinese New Year, which will be celebrated with performances by Chinese international students, Chinese Culture Club members, Chinese class students, and children and adults from the local community,” said Chinese Culture Club president Yijie Ren ’20

In addition to including such a wide variety of performers in the event, the club also aims to make the program accessible and enjoyable to a diverse audience. Yidi Wu, assistant professor of history and co-advisor of CCC said, “Our Saint Mary’s Chinese New Year celebration strives to be more inclusive by using both Chinese and English.”

The event will also showcase Saint Mary’s 2017 China Summer Program – “Seeing China through Women’s Eyes” and a reflection on the past 10 years’ celebration of Chinese culture and language.

Sponsored by the Saint Mary’s College Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL) and the East Meets West Chinese Dance Company from the local community, China Night is sure to be an educational and cultural evening.
