Roxane Gay to speak at Saint Mary's

January 15, 2018 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — The Saint Mary’s College Department of Communication Studies, Dance, and Theatre is proud to present “An Evening with Roxane Gay” on Wednesday, February 7 at 7 p.m. in O’Laughlin Auditorium. 

New York Times bestselling author Roxane Gay’s most recent work Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, explores what it means to be overweight in a time when the bigger you are, the less you are seen. Her deeply personal memoir tells a story that hasn’t yet been told. At a time when women are speaking up about injustice and sexual violence, Gay’s memoir adds a powerful voice to the conversation.

Helen Ho, assistant professor of communication studies, said, “Roxane Gay writes with clarity and humor to bring intensely personal experiences into conversation with larger important issues of feminism and social justice. With her visit, we hope to embrace and explore a dialogue about the role of Saint Mary's community members within these larger conversations.”

Roxane Gay’s writing appears in Best American Mystery Stories 2014, Best American Short Stories 2012, Best Sex Writing 2012, A Public Space, McSweeney’s, Tin House, Oxford American, American Short Fiction, Virginia Quarterly Review, and many others. She is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. She is the author of the books Ayiti, An Untamed State, the New York Times bestselling Bad Feminist, the nationally bestselling Difficult Women, and the New York Times bestselling Hunger. She is also the author of World of Wakanda for Marvel. Gay has several books forthcoming and is also at work on television and film projects.

The lecture is presented by the Department of Communication Studies, Dance, and Theatre in conjunction with the Office of Multicultural Services, Student Involvement, The Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership and the Departments of English and Gender and Women’s Studies.
