NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team had their five-match winning streak snapped in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-22) loss to No. 6 ranked Calvin on Wednesday evening.
The visiting Knights took control of the opening set with an 11-2 run to switch a 3-2 deficit into a 13-5 lead. The Belles chipped away at the deficit to make it 14-11. Audrey Shannon served up an ace, Alyssa Chong had a kill, Marielle Corbett and Chong combined on a block, and Morgan VanderWey tallied an ace. Calvin responded with a decisive 7-2 spurt to gain a 21-13 lead late in the set. Leah Buck hammered down a kill a few points later to keep the Belles alive, but the Knights closed out the set with a kill for the 25-15 opening set win.
Calvin gained momentum early in the second set while establishing a 14-6 lead. Saint Mary's got kills by Corbett, Bonek, and Chong to stay close at 15-11, but the Belles were unable to get a big run as the home side could not get the deficit below four points. A late push by Saint Mary's made it 21-17, but the Knights took four of the next five points for a 25-18 win.
The Belles fought their way back from a 17-11 deficit in the third set to make it a 23-19 score. The tail end of that run was aided by kills from Rachel Bonek, Nicole Lukens, and Leah Buck as the Knights called a timeout. Calvin went ahead 24-19 after the timeout, but Saint Mary's kept the match alive with a Calvin service ace, a double block by Buck and Corbett, and a kill by Corbett to make it 24-22. The Knights, however, clinched the set and the match on the next point with a kill.

Th Belles (10-8, 6-5 MIAA) are back in action on Tuesday, October 17 when they travel to Hope for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Flying Dutch.
