KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team earned a 3-1, (25-19, 23-25, 25-16, 28-26) win at Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon.
The Belles bounced back from a second-set loss by gaining an early lead in the third set. An 8-0 run early in the stanza gave Saint Mary's a 16-5 lead, and the Belles had at least a six-point cushion over the Hornets for the remainder of the set.
The fourth set saw Kalamazoo and Saint Mary's battle in a tight match as the Belles tried to secure the win while the Hornets aimed to force a fifth set. Neither side had a lead larger than four points in the set. Kalamazoo closed in on taking the set by gaining an edge late with 23-21 and 24-22 leads. The Belles fought off set-point twice as Saint Mary's capitalized on a miscue by the Hornets and Rachel Bonek put down a timely kill. A few points later, it was Marielle Corbett who kept the Belles in the match with a kill to tie the score at 26-26. Nicole Lukens and Corbett put away the set and the match with consecutive kills to lift the Belles to the 28-26 fourth set decision.
