Belles Win MIAA Championship with Record Round

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - The Saint Mary's golf team shot a blistering 301 to win the 2017 MIAA Championship by 42 strokes on Saturday.

The Belles finished the fall season with a stroke total of 1,941 over the six rounds of play. Hope finished second with a cumulative stroke total of 1,983. Olivet was third (2,024) and Alma placed fourth (2,066).

Taylor Kehoe was the medalist of the two-day event after shooting a 75 on Saturday to match her 75 on Friday for a two-day total of 150. Hunter Kehoe was two strokes back with a 77 on Saturday and finished tied for second overall with a two-day score of 152.

Lauren Read fired a career-low round of 73, marking the second-lowest MIAA round in program history, for the best score of the day. The sophomore had a two-day score of 152 to tie for second place overall. Summer Stillson secured the team record and title with a 76 on day two. She finished with a share of eighth place with a cumulative score of 161 for the weekend.

Kelsey Conkright was the fifth Belle in the lineup and matched her Friday score with a 91 to finish tied for 34th with a 182.

Courtney Quinlan and Libby Clark competed as individuals at the tournament. Quinlan had a season-low 83 to match her career-low score. The senior finished 19th overall with a 169 at Bedford Valley. Clark shot an 89 and finished tied for 28th individually with a 177.

The 301 marks the best 18-hole round in program history for the golf team while also representing one of the best 18-hole rounds in MIAA history. The team score was a one-stroke improvement upon the previous school record of 302 shot by the Belles in March 2011.

The conference title is the first for head coach Kim Moore, and it is the seventh MIAA championship in school history (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010). Moreover, the team's stroke average of 323.5 marks a school record for the lowest MIAA scoring average by improving upon the 2009 average of 324.0.

Hunter Kehoe and Summer Stillson each earned a spot on the All-MIAA First Team for their cumulative stroke averages for the fall season. Taylor Kehoe and Lauren Read, meanwhile, were All-MIAA Second Team honorees for the 2017 season. It is the second consecutive season in which the Belles had four team members earn All-MIAA honors.

The Belles will host two of the three MIAA NCAA Automatic Qualifier rounds in the spring season.
