Sister Katherine Wingfield, CSC
(- March 8, 2008)
Please, join in prayer of thanksgiving for this Sister of the Holy Cross who died on March 8, 2008.
Sister Katherine was a delightful, self-effacing religious whose family has a rich historical heritage. She never bragged about the fact that she could trace her direct lineage to relatives who came over on the Mayflower or that on her mother’s side she was a distant cousin of George Washington. She just smiled and giggled a little when teased about her genealogy.
Religious commitment was very much a part of her family life, her two sisters also became members of religious orders, one a Poor Clare Sister and the other a Sister of the Presentation.
One area dear to Sister Katherine’s heart was that of social justice. She was an excellent scholar and immersed herself in all issues related to that cause. Wherever she was assigned, she found a way to give life to her zeal whether she was teaching the Puerto Rican children in New York, the Hispanics in Texas or engaged in marches for just causes, such as demonstrating in front of the South African Embassy. Even in retirement she continued her personal crusade to promote issues related to social justice both at Saint Angela Hall in Kensington, Maryland, and here at Saint Mary’s. She was a woman with a cause! That cause is now in her hands in a more powerful and grace filled way.
Funeral arrangements for Sister Katherine are as follows: Reception of the body on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at 9:30 a.m. with the funeral Mass at 1:30 p.m. the same day. May Sister Katherine rest in peace.
