Word has been received of the death of Sister M. Peter Clare (Berna) who died at 12:20 a.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, Indiana.
Few would classify being a patient as a ministry, but that is exactly how Sister Peter Clare viewed her long-term illness. In her cheerful acceptance and gracious outreach to those who ministered to her daily needs she actively drew people closer to God.
After the first onset of her debilitating disease in 1962 she struggled daily to accept the cross and the challenge of the downhill plunge of the physical limitations it placed upon her, but she never gave up. She continued doing whatever small tasks she could accomplish even after being confined to her motorized chair.
Until her last devastating stroke she could be seen rolling across the chapel floor to operate the camera station for every liturgical celebration that took place in the church. The African violet plants she nurtured for the annual boutique were famous for their variety of color and hardiness; they were “quick sells” every year. And no one, particularly the sisters in the convent, would downplay the importance of her “candy cart” routine where “sweets for the sweet” were delivered with a gracious and engaging attitude that cheered the recipients.
Nothing about Sister Peter Clare was depressing because she overcame the insurmountable odds of her disease by a demeanor that deflected the focus away from herself and placed it on others. It was a joy to be with her. This gracious lady uplifted all who had the privilege of interacting with her.
Funeral arrangements for sister are as follows: Reception of the Body on Friday, January 8, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. with the Mass of Resurrection the same day at 1:30 p.m. These ceremonies will take place in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto. Sister Peter Clare will now rest in the peace of the Lord she loved so deeply.
