NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's soccer team took a commanding 6-0 win over Manchester on Friday evening.
The Belles put the pressure on the Spartans early and kept the pedal to the metal in the home victory. Saint Mary's earned a corner kick in the third minute of play, and Maya Cole sent a dangerous cross into the box. The Spartans initially broke up the play, but Madison Jurgovan regained possession and played the ball back out to Cole in space. Cole's second cross was met with a header by Rose Stackhouse as the freshman sent home the game's first goal just 3:19 into play. In the 20th minute, the Belles struck again. Lexi Trombly had a shot blocked, and the ball settled at Stackhouse's feet before she found the back of the net for a second time for a 2-0 lead.
Saint Mary's earned consecutive corner kicks midway through the half. The second of those opportunities yielded a goal after Lexi Trombly headed in a well-placed corner kick from Maya Cole to make it a 3-0 lead in the 23rd minute. A string of strong passes by the Belles led to a fourth goal just a few minutes later. Kellen Hinchey slid a pass ahead for Sophie Bubnar on the right flank. Bubnar then sent a low pass from the right side of the box toward the middle of the zone, and Rose Stackhouse used a low shot to beat the goalkeeper to make it 4-0 while registering her first collegiate hat trick. Barely two minutes later, another string of passes yielded a fifth goal. Madison Jurgovan played a ball for Bubnar to run on to with space in the offensive end. Again, Bubnar was able to find Stackhouse in dangerous territory, and Stackhouse delivered with her fourth goal in the 31st minute of action.
Bubnar and Stackhouse continued to find one another to create yet another scoring play for the Belles. Bubnar played a centering pass to Stackhouse, and Stackhouse then sent a pass ahead for Bubnar in space in the box after Bubnar beat her defender. Bubnar buried her shot just as the clock hit the 36 minute mark to put the Belles up 6-0.
The Belles continued to put together dangerous chances throughout the second half of play, but Saint Mary's was unable to add to the lead over the final 45 minutes of play. Delaney Rohlman, meanwhile, ensured the clean sheet in goal with a strong challenge late in the game. The Spartans had a near breakaway chance with a ball played past the Saint Mary's defense with just over 16 minutes remaining in regulation. Rohlman raced off of her line and cleared the ball upfield just before a forward for Manchester was able to get a shot off just inside the 18-yard box.
Saint Mary's out-shot Manchester 37-6 and registered 10 corner kicks to the Spartans' zero. The 6-0 win also marks the largest win and highest-scoring game for a Saint Mary's side since a 7-0 victory against Albion on September 25, 2012.
