CENTERVILLE, Ind. - The Saint Mary's soccer team fell by a 3-0 margin in their season opener against IU East on Saturday evening.
After inclement weather delayed the start of the match by more than two hours, the host Red Wolves gained a quick lead with a goal in the third minute of play. The Belles nearly netted the equalizer late in the first period. Rose Stackhouse had a shot off of a free kick go off the post, and the loose ball off of the play was cleared away before a teammate could tap in the rebound in the 41st minute of play. Barely a minute later, Stackhouse had a scoring effort saved in the box. Maya Cole added a shot on goal with just over two minutes remaining in the period as the score stood at 1-0 at the halftime break.
The Belles had a pair of shots in the early minutes of the second half, but the Red Wolves doubled their lead in the 63rd minute of play. IU East added a third goal in the 69th minute, and the Belles were unable to break through as the game ended by that same 3-0 margin.
