Saint Mary's College will host its High Potentials Leadership Program for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors JULY 8-13, 2018.

HIGH POTENTIALS PARTICIPANTS DEVELOP ESSENTIAL LEADERSHIP SKILLS including tips on how to command an audience and how to think and articulate thoughts on one’s feet. High Potentials participants will also meet and learn from accomplished women in business and government including female staffers in South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s office and female employees with the South Bend startups enFocus, Green Bridge Growers, South Bend Code School, and F Cubed, among other young companies.
With the guidance of faculty and guest presenters
High Potentials participants will be better able to:
- Assume leadership roles at school and in one’s community.
- Develop critical-thinking skills specially designed for women in the workplace.
- Discuss core concepts of emotional intelligence and self-expression and identify strategies for personal improvement.
- Choose and understand leadership styles and receive individualized instruction on how to further develop one’s own leadership style.
- Learn principles for effective community engagement and organizing others.
- Prepare for leadership roles in college and beyond.
High Potentials will advance participants’ leadership capacity by connecting them with the tools to assume leadership responsibilities. Through field trips, meetings with accomplished women, and personal mentorship, students will improve their leadership abilities and build on their individual strengths.

- Team building ropes course
- Mindfulness yoga
- Canoeing
- Hiking
- City quest scavenger hunt

Academic Requirements:
Completion of freshman year of high school (9th grade) prior to start of program.

Female, rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are ready to take on greater responsibility and want to grow as leaders.
Faculty:
TERRI RUSS is an associate professor of communication studies and also teaches courses in gender and women studies at Saint Mary’s. She has a bachelor’s and PhD from Purdue University and a Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University. Prof. Russ’ scholarship focuses on the lived experiences of women and girls, with a current focus on collecting the oral histories of women leaders. In 2014 she founded the Michiana Women Leaders Project to collect and document women’s contributions to development of South Bend and surrounding areas. Prof. Russ is the author of Bitchin’ Bodies: Young Women Talk about Body Dissatisfaction and has authored chapters in Race/Gender/Media3.0, Gendered Approaches to Applied Communication and Electronic Tribes: The Virtual World of Geeks, Gamers, Shamans, and Scammers.
