ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Hope shortstop Brooke Nienhuis its Position Player of the Week and Saint Mary's righthander Callie Selner its Pitcher of the Week for games played through April 29.
Selner, a sophomore from Elkhart, Ind. (Memorial HS), delivered a clutch pitching performance for the Belles in a 2-1 complete-game victory over Alma that clinched the final spot in this week's MIAA softball tournament. She scattered six hits against the Scots’ high-powered offense, did not walk a batter and struck out six. She also went the distance in a 1-0, eight-inning loss to Alma, allowing six hits, striking out five and walking one. Selner's eight wins this season in MIAA play this season ties her for tops among pitchers.
Earlier last week, she earned both wins in the circle in a doubleheader sweep of Manchester. In that sweep, she set a new school record for pitching wins in a season (16), which she has improved to 17 with the game-one win over Alma.
She is being honored as Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career.
