“From These Honored Dead” to Honor the Fallen of 9/11 and Civil War

September 2, 2015 (Notre Dame, Ind.)— The Saint Mary’s College Department of Music will present a concert entitled “From These Honored Dead” on Friday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theater of Moreau Center of the Arts. This free event will feature the Saint Mary’s Women’s Choir, conducted by Nancy Menk, and members of the Euclid Quartet as well as others. There will also be a pre-concert lecture given by composer William Averitt discussing his inspiration for the piece. This is only the second time the concert has been performed and the first time in Indiana.

The 45-minute song cycle was commissioned by the Texas Lutheran University School of Music to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War and celebrates the memory of the fallen. In that spirit the concert will be performed on 9/11, the 14th anniversary of  the terrorist attacks on the U.S. The work has two pieces: one for piano, soprano, string trio and women’s choir featuring poetry by Walt Whitman and Herman Melville; the other will feature a solo for flute and piano. Featured performers will include Euclid Quartet members Jameson Cooper (violin,) Luis Vargas (viola,) and Si-Yan Darren Li (cello.) Also performing with the Saint Mary's College Women's Choir are Sherry Klinedinst (piano), and music professor Laurel Thomas (soprano.)
