Sister Elizabeth "Betty" Smoyer, SNDdeN
Sister Betty made you feel connected to the Mass/Ministry, encouraging excellence for God.
Her Story
I first met Sister Betty when I came to Saint Mary’s in 2004. I could easily see that she was passionate about Campus Ministry and called others to serve. I quickly decided to join in and became part of the weekly Mass ensemble; we sang and played for the morning Mass at Our Lady of Loretto each Sunday.
Working with Sister Betty was an invaluable experience. I remember her always smiling, and even when things became tough or stressed, she always found the positive and encouraged us to give our best – to God at Mass as well as every day through our studies and being a part of the Saint Mary’s community. I can still picture her commenting to students when they said, “I have a silly question.” She would say, “There are no silly questions. The silly ones are the ones you don’t ask.”
I had an incredible four years at Saint Mary’s, and I am so blessed to have been and to continue to be part of the Saint Mary’s legacy. Sister Betty helped shape my college experience into one of faith, service, and inspiration. I have continued to be part of Music Ministry and served in the parish and community where I settled after graduation. I often think of Sister Betty and the many wonderful memories of Campus Ministry at Saint Mary’s. She is a great example of what Saint Mary’s is all about.
